Overcome Jet lag like a pro! Check out below my 6 best tips on how to prevent jetlag when traveling.
What is Jet lag?
Jet lag is basically a temporary sleep disorder. Woah! that sounds a lot more serious when you put it like that. But not to worry, experiencing jet lag is very common among travelers who travel between different time zones.
Jet lag is normally caused when the normal sleeping pattern is disrupted in which a person can become very tired, sluggish, disorientated, and find normal every day functioning a struggle.
There are also other factors to a flight that can help contribute to these unwanted symptoms such as dehydration, lack of oxygen circulation, and long periods of sitting. Luckily there are many ways that can help reduce these side effects and make you feel more refreshed.
1. Water, Water & more Water
Now, this may sound annoyingly obvious but drinking loads of water before, during, and after your flight will keep you well hydrated and less sluggish when you arrive at your destination.
I like to take an empty drink bottle with me and fill it up once I’m on the plane as I find those tiny little cups of water just don’t cut it.
Again you may need to pee every 2 mins but getting up and moving around is super important for your body’s circulation. Also, keep clear of alcohol and caffeine as these will dehydrate you and make you feel worse.
2. Adjust Your Sleep
There are many ways in which you can prepare your body for a new sleeping pattern.
Getting some quality sleep on the plane is not only going to make you feel more refreshed and energized, but sleeping at the right time and syncing your sleeping pattern with your destination will put you on the right track for when you arrive.
The general idea is to stick to your new destination time zone if it’s night where you’re going then try and sleep if it’s morning then stay awake.
If you can’t sleep, that’s okay, don’t force it as this can cause you to be annoyed and frustrated which can prevent your body from sleeping at all.
3. Consider Melatonin
If you’re that type of person that struggles to sleep on a plane then you could try Melatonin supplements, this helps you to fall asleep.
Melatonin is a natural sleep hormone that is produced by the body and when you fly certain triggers such as anxiety, stress & frustration can alter the amount of level of melatonin being produced.
I personally like the sleep and glow by Amie it also includes Ashwagandha root which can help lower blood pressure and stress levels.
Disclaimer! Please research & discuss with your GP before taking any supplements or medications.
4. Embrace The Sunshine
What better way to reset your internal clock than getting outside and soaking up the sun.
A dose of fresh air and sunshine is exactly what the doctor ordered which isn’t too hard to come by if you’re on a sunny holiday getaway.
This will not only help you adjust to your new time zone quicker but will make you feel much more refreshed and awake.
5. Long Layovers
Making the most of long layovers, believe it or not, can actually help you adjust to new time zones at a more slower pace.
So if you don’t want to get hit too hard by jetlag try breaking up your trip. I personally love doing this, there are so many great benefits you not only feel better but you can explore and experience other places whilst you adjust. #win
6. Jet lag Apps
As always new-age technology isn’t too far behind. Here are a few jet lag apps that can help reduce those horrible symptoms and overall provide you with a better schedule that can help you on the right track to becoming jet lag free.
